Public preview of AppSource test drive framework delivers compelling experiences for business app users

Microsoft AppSource launched last year as a destination where organizations can find and try the right apps to help transform their business — apps that work with the Microsoft products and technologies that businesses already use, such as Cortana Intelligence, Dynamics 365, Office 365, Power BI, and more.

We introduced Test Drive so business users can easily try an app and evaluate it with no upfront commitment.

Now, at //Build 2017, we've announced the public preview of the test drive framework, which enables ISVs to deliver these low-friction trial experiences for their apps.

The test drive framework means that ISVs that build SaaS apps or add-ons for Microsoft business applications can enable a smooth trial environment for apps that require additional components to be deployed to a customer's Azure or Microsoft business application tenant. The framework makes available to business users a preconfigured environment to help demonstrate the app's key features and benefits. There is no need for business users to set up or use their Azure or Dynamics 365 subscription; they can simply launch the preconfigured environment, try the app, and decide whether it's right for them.

How to enable a customer-led trial experience using test drive

It's straightforward for an ISV to use the test drive framework to set up a smooth test drive environment. The ISV provides the following: app metadata, ARM templates, business application workflows, Azure subscriptions to be used for the trial, and test drive notification email template; and also determines the length of time that the test drive should be made available for a particular business user. The AppSource test drive framework uses these configurations to enable the test drive experience.
