Why use Maps in Power BI? “Where” things happen is often a neglected dimension of Business Intelligence. Usually we work in two dimensions, numbers and place names. However, it is not easy to understand the relative proximity of points in data using just the place name, address or zip code. It is much easier when visualised and analysed spatially – the third dimension.

Who might benefit?

Most data has some form of location component and so viewing that data on a map will give much better insights. For instance, you will be able to see where the data is and whether it is uniformly distributed, or clustered in smaller groups. Using an interactive map will enable you to explore the data by zooming in/out and looking at different areas of data to identify patterns or reasons for the distribution.

What can OrcaViz-Pro do?

OrcaViz-Pro brings location intelligence into your Power BI reports and dashboards. It enables you to:

• Visualise and explore the data points on an interactive map with selectable map layers.
• click or hover over a data point (pin or circle) on the map and see the configurable information balloons showing data associated with the pin.
• Move pins if they incorrectly positioned.
• Use Circle Visualisations to scale the data points with sizing based on a numeric value in the data and user defined colours.
• Use Pin Visualisations with a selection of pin icons and colours.
• Add Labels to pins or circle icons.
• Visualise heatmaps of the data, highlighting the clustering of data.
• Overlay geographic borders (states, territories, countries etc)
• Create Multiple Layers on the map from the same dataset (pins, circles, heatmaps and text) and change the order and visibility of each layer.
• Add Multiple datasets on the same map enabling the relative scale and proximity to be understood.
• Extract data within a region of interest, using a border or hand drawn shape and create a new dataset.
• Cross Filter the data from the map by any of the columns in the data and cross filter to other custom visuals.
• Drill Through from the map into other sheets.
• Export data in CSV, KML or Geojson format.
• Use Spatial Analytics to count or sum data within geographic boundaries or hand drawn shapes and append the result to your dataset.
• Add latitude and longitude coordinates to your data using the inbuilt geocoder, or adding your Bing Maps geocoding API key.

In addition, sometimes, it is important to see two or more datasets layered on the same map. For instance, you might want to view the location of your businesses and how that relates to the distribution of your customers. To do this in Power BI, you would be required to combine the data into one dataset or use two maps side by side. However, OrcaViz enables you to load additional datasets from your local machine onto the same map. (NB: Additional datasets loaded onto the map cannot be stored with the map in the pbix file).

OrcaViz-Pro is a fully functional custom visual but limited to the display of 10,000 data points. If you require more than this, please contact us.

You will require latitude and longitude coordinates to visualise your data. If you do not have them, OrcaViz-Pro can add those coordinates, but you will require an API key for Bing Maps.
